Gearboxes: Gear Wheel Materials
Materials used are:
Plastics |
Manufactured mainly by injection molding. Low costs per part, but tooling costs. |

Brass |
Manufactured as machined (milled) parts, or metal powder sintered. |

Steel |
Manufactured as machined parts – milled or caulked, or metal powder sintered. |
Metal powder sintered parts have advantage of low costs, but need tooling.
Loadability, especially peaks, is lower compared to a machined wheel of same dimension.
Plastics moulding and metal sintering allow to produce pinion-wheel combinations as one component, saving costs significantly:
