Gearboxes: Gear Wheel Materials

Materials used are:

Plastics

  

Manufactured mainly by injection molding. Low costs per part, but tooling costs.
Application in small size gearboxes, or in first stage of medium sized gearboxes.

Brass

  

Manufactured as machined (milled) parts, or metal powder sintered.

Steel

  

Manufactured as machined parts – milled or caulked, or metal powder sintered.


Metal powder sintered parts have advantage of low costs, but need tooling.
Loadability, especially peaks, is lower compared to a machined wheel of same dimension.

Plastics moulding and metal sintering allow to produce pinion-wheel combinations as one component, saving costs significantly:
